Since Bollywood’s earliest days, women have played a part in its success, both in front of the camera and away from it. Yet it has taken more than half a century for women to assert their presence in significant numbers in Bollywood. Today, Hindi cinema relies on a record number of women who work tirelessly, sometimes invisibly, to keep the world’s largest dream factory buzzing.

This book tells the story of twenty incredible women, many with no prior connections in the industry, who have carved successful careers despite significant challenges. They often work away from the public gaze-as studio heads, producers, directors, make-up artists, stylists, script writers, lyricists, editors, choreographers, stunt artists, set designers, and in the many other jobs that support the making of a movie.

These women deserve to be applauded and their journeys acknowledged, as they transform Bollywood and in the process, create a new India.

This riveting look at the female powerhouses of Bollywood is long overdue “          – Tina Brown, founder, Women in the World summit

“Here is a new set of role models for women everywhere” – Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group

“Empowered, Insightful and exceptionally researched’ – Karan Johar, film director and producer

“An excellent, important read at this point in India’s history” – Anil Kapoor

WE NEED YOU

The People Who Keep London Working

London is home to tens of thousands of people from around the world. A vibrant, heaving city that thrives on the back of economic contributions made by those who staff our offices, man our corner shops, deliver our food, drive our trains, build our homes, mind our children and work in hospitals, beauty salons and on farms. Many of them are immigrants. Their contribution to contemporary London is immeasurable.

I’m taking informal portraits of these Londoners and by doing that, I hope to highlight the key role immigrants play in boosting London’s economy. By shining a light on their shared experiences of adopting a new city, making a living and creating a home away from home, We Need You will put a face to some of these nameless, faceless workers without whom London would not be London.
